The visit focused on inspecting the facility’s operations across bamboo cultivation, modern processing technologies, quality assessment, and product innovation.

Upon arrival, the Governor was received by Dr. Abhinav Kant, In-charge of BCDI, alongside institute staff.

Key Highlights of the Governor’s Visit

  • Bamboo Pathshala & Nursery: Dr. Kant briefed the Governor on various native bamboo species, their unique growth characteristics, cultivation methods, and practical applications.

  • Product Testing Laboratory: The Governor inspected testing facilities used to evaluate the strength, durability, and quality parameters necessary for products to meet broader commercial market standards.

  • Exhibition of Innovated Products: BCDI showcased a wide array of bamboo creations. The Governor noted Tripura’s bamboo potential for diverse manufacturing—including items such as javelins and fishing rods—and highlighted the unique local craft of making artistic portraits from bamboo roots.

Focus on Artisans & Livelihood Opportunities

Addressing the media, Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu emphasized that Tripura is endowed with a rich variety of bamboo with strong commercial potential. He commended BCDI for training craftsmen nationwide and noted that the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) is actively mobilizing Self-Help Groups (SHGs) toward bamboo enterprise development.

To further streamline local manufacturing, the Governor urged BCDI officials to:

  1. Establish a Raw-Material Assembly Centre: Set up a centralized facility where local artisans can procure pre-processed bamboo materials directly, saving labor time and accelerating product production.

  2. Adopt Modern Tools & Tech: Integrate advanced machinery to scale output while maintaining quality.

  3. Preserve Heritage Crafts: Protect and commercialize traditional techniques, such as bamboo root carving, to generate sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
