Varanasi, September 15, 2026: Varanasi is set for a major transformation in urban mobility with the upcoming Varuna Elevated Corridor, a ₹10,998-crore infrastructure project designed to improve connectivity, reduce congestion and support the city’s growing tourism, economic and logistics needs.
The 43.218-km corridor will run along the Varuna River and connect NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road, creating an additional high-capacity route through the city.
The project received approval from the Union Cabinet in July and will be developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Elevated Corridor to Reduce Traffic Pressure
The predominantly elevated corridor will have 6/4-lane configurations and will include flyovers, loops, ramps and service roads. The project will also feature an iconic cable-stayed bridge and an extradosed foot-over bridge-cum-major bridge.
The corridor forms part of Varanasi’s broader decongestion strategy, aimed at improving movement between major highways, railway stations, the airport and important areas across the city.
Faster Access to Airport and Railway Stations
The new route is expected to improve connectivity to major transport hubs, including Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi Cantonment, Varanasi City Railway Station, Kashi Railway Station and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction.
According to the government, the project is designed for speeds of around 80–100 kmph. Travel time between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station is expected to fall from approximately 40 minutes to around 20 minutes.
The corridor is also projected to significantly reduce travel time between Varanasi Junction and the airport, with the journey potentially dropping from nearly one hour to around 20 minutes.
Boost for Tourism and Pilgrimage
Varanasi attracts millions of visitors because of its religious, cultural and historical significance. The improved road network is expected to provide smoother access to important destinations, including the city’s famous ghats, Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Kashi Vishwanath Corridor.
The additional road capacity could be particularly useful during major festivals and peak pilgrimage seasons, when traffic volumes increase significantly.
Better Connectivity for Education and Business
The project is also expected to improve connectivity to educational institutions, including Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, making travel easier for students, teachers and researchers.
Beyond urban mobility, the corridor is expected to strengthen Varanasi’s role as a regional economic and logistics hub.
The project aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and is expected to improve access to logistics nodes and economic zones in Varanasi and neighbouring Chandauli.
Supporting Regional Logistics
Improved connections between highways, rail infrastructure and freight networks could make the movement of agricultural products, industrial goods, construction materials and minerals more efficient.
By reducing congestion and transportation delays, the corridor is expected to support economic activity in eastern Uttar Pradesh and strengthen Varanasi’s position as an important regional connectivity centre.
Elevated Design to Preserve Urban Space
One of the key features of the project is its predominantly elevated alignment. This approach is intended to add substantial road capacity while reducing the requirement for extensive widening of existing roads in densely populated areas.
Strategically placed ramps, loops and service roads will allow the corridor to handle through traffic while supporting local connectivity.
The project includes approximately ₹4,565.33 crore for civil construction and ₹934.91 crore for land acquisition, according to the government release.
Relief for Major Congestion Points
The Varuna Elevated Corridor is expected to ease traffic pressure at several busy locations, including Varanasi Junction, Phulwaria and Chaukaghat, where local and through traffic currently compete for limited road capacity.
The project is therefore being positioned not only as a road-building initiative but as a major component of Varanasi’s long-term urban mobility strategy.
With the city continuing to grow as a centre for tourism, pilgrimage, education, commerce and logistics, the Varuna Elevated Corridor is expected to provide an important new transport backbone connecting key parts of Varanasi and the surrounding region.
