Ahmedabad: India is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, after the city was formally confirmed as the host of the centenary edition of the multi-sport event.
The decision was ratified by delegates representing 74 Commonwealth nations and territories during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, United Kingdom. Commonwealth Sport officially confirmed Ahmedabad as the host city on November 26, 2025.
The 2030 edition will be particularly significant as it will mark 100 years of the Commonwealth Games, which began in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. India will host the event for the second time after New Delhi staged the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
Major boost for India’s sporting ambitions
The Ahmedabad Games are being viewed as an important step in India’s broader ambition to establish itself as a major global sporting destination.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya has described the 2030 Games as a significant moment in India’s sporting journey. The government has also linked the event to its long-term objective of making India a global sports powerhouse by 2047.
India has also expressed its ambition to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, making the successful organisation of major international events an important part of the country’s sporting roadmap.
Ahmedabad prepares for the centenary Games
Ahmedabad’s selection comes after India submitted its formal bid to host the 2030 Games. Commonwealth Sport subsequently recommended the Indian bid before the final ratification in Glasgow.
The 2030 event is expected to feature 15 to 17 sports, according to Commonwealth Sport-related reports, making it considerably larger than the streamlined 2026 edition in Glasgow.
The hosting rights also provide India with an opportunity to showcase its sporting infrastructure, organisational capabilities and growing interest in international sports.
With Ahmedabad now officially confirmed, preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games are expected to gather pace as India looks ahead to another major chapter in its international sporting journey.
