Police & Administration Working Together to Reduce Road Accidents and Fatalities: Tripura Transport Minister

Agartala, September 22, 2026 – Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury stated today that the police and state administration are collaborating closely to reduce road accidents and fatalities in the state. Speaking after inaugurating the West Tripura district-level ‘Road Safety Awareness and Sensitisation’ programme at Sonar Tori Guest House conference hall, the Minister highlighted key initiatives aimed at supporting accident victims.

Chowdhury emphasized that providing necessary assistance and support to accident victims is a collective responsibility. He introduced three government schemes: PM Rahat (Cashless Treatment), Hit-and-Run Compensation Scheme, and Rah-Veer, designed for this purpose. However, he noted that many people, particularly in rural areas, are still unaware of these benefits. The Central and State governments are actively working to ensure broader access to these facilities.

Providing details, the Minister explained that the PM Rahat scheme, officially known as Pradhan Mantri Road Accident Victims Hospitalisation and Assured Treatment, provides cashless treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh for eligible road accident victims at designated hospitals. The scheme was launched in May 2025.

Regarding the Hit-and-Run scheme, Chowdhury stated that while legal action is taken against absconding drivers, the family of a person killed in a road accident is eligible for financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh, and an injured person can receive ₹50,000. Introduced by the Central government in February 2022 under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the scheme was implemented in Tripura in April 2022. Six-member district-level Hit-and-Run committees, headed by respective District Magistrates, have been formed for its effective implementation.

Elaborating on the Rah-Veer (Good Samaritan) scheme, the Transport Minister announced that individuals providing immediate assistance to accident victims, arranging prompt transportation to hospitals, and helping them receive medical treatment will be awarded ₹25,000 and a Rah-Veer certificate. Such individuals will also receive full legal protection and will not face legal harassment. The scheme was launched in Tripura on March 31, 2026, with the reward increased from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 to encourage public participation in saving lives. Nationally, ten Rah-Veers receive an annual award of ₹1 lakh and certificates.

West Tripura Zilla Parishad acting Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil highlighted the devastating impact of accidents on families and emphasized the importance of awareness as an effective prevention tool. IGP (Law & Order) Manchak Ipper detailed the roles of police personnel and social organizations in road safety, while Transport Department Secretary U.K. Chakma discussed objectives, coordination, and expected outcomes. MLA Meena Rani Sarkar was also present.

West Tripura District Magistrate and Collector Dr. Vishal Kumar delivered the welcome address. During the technical session, Transport Commissioner Subrata Chowdhury, IPS, SP Traffic Kanta Jangir, and other officials discussed the implementation and benefits of the PM Rahat, Hit-and-Run, and Rah-Veer schemes. Sub-divisional magistrates, Panchayat Samiti members, Zilla Parishad members, and various government department officials participated in the seminar.
