AGARTALA: In a major boost to Tripura’s public healthcare infrastructure, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha inaugurated a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) at the Super Speciality Block of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital today. Established at a total cost of ₹13.50 crore, the new ICU facility features 18 beds—equally divided with nine beds each for male and female patients.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Dr. Saha highlighted the state government’s ambitious goal to position AGMC among the top 10 government medical colleges in India. He emphasized that the addition of the ICU and CSSD units will ensure faster, continuous advanced medical care while significantly bolstering patient safety.
The Chief Minister noted that the government is actively modernizing referral hospitals across Tripura to reduce the need for residents to seek advanced medical treatment outside the state. With patient referrals outside Tripura already declining noticeably, the government aims to eventually bring this number down to zero. To support these upgrades, healthcare workers and doctors are undergoing phased training in modern unit operations, alongside the ongoing rollout of digital services across state hospitals.
Highlighting ongoing development projects, Dr. Saha shared that nine super-speciality blocks are currently operational in the state. Furthermore, a ₹203-crore super-speciality block dedicated to mother and child care is currently under construction at GBP Hospital, alongside a new eye hospital. Plans are also underway to establish a dedicated medical university in Tripura, complementing the state’s existing Homeopathic, Ayurvedic, and Dental colleges.
Addressing media queries, the Chief Minister announced key upcoming security and access enhancements for GBP Hospital, including round-the-clock modern CCTV surveillance monitored by a dedicated unit, a special priority corridor for ambulances carrying critical patients, and measures to ensure the continuous availability of essential generic medicines.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Health and Family Welfare Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, MLA and Rogi Kalyan Samiti Chairperson Minarani Sarkar, AGMC Principal Dr. Tapan Majumder, and GBP Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami.
