IIIT Agartala’s Permanent Campus to Boost Technical Education and Research in Tripura

Governor of Tripura, Indrasena Reddy Nallu today laid the foundation stone and performed the Bhumi Pujan for the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Agartala, at Mohanpur. Present at the ceremony were Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath and Minister of State for Industries and Commerce Brishaketu Debbarma. The permanent campus of IIIT Agartala is proposed to be built on 50.16 acres of land at an estimated cost of about ₹108 crore. It will include academic buildings, separate hostels for male and female students, housing for faculty and staff, and other residential facilities.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said IIIT Agartala will become an important centre of research and innovation. The institute will serve as a beacon of technological progress, not only for Tripura but for the entire Northeast and beyond. The campus will attract talented students from across the country and the world, and will nurture future leaders who will make significant contributions to national progress.
The Governor said that as the country moves toward the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047, institutions like IIIT Agartala will play an important role in technological excellence, inclusive development, and national progress. Referring to the rapid global change driven by artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies, he urged students to become creators of technology rather than merely its users. He advised them to take innovative initiatives to solve real-life problems and to make meaningful contributions to the welfare of society.
The Governor added that once the permanent campus is established, it will bring significant change to the development of the surrounding area and create new opportunities for local people. He expressed hope that the institute would contribute significantly to regional development by encouraging innovation, creating employment and other opportunities, and linking academic research with the needs of society.
Describing the day as a moment of collective pride for IIIT Agartala, Tripura, and the entire Northeast, the Governor recalled that the institute began its academic activities in the 2018-19 academic year from the campus of its mentor institute, the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala. Since then, the institute has steadily progressed toward excellence in technical education, research, and innovation.
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the journey of the Indian Institute of Information Technology in Tripura began on 25 June 2018. Within a few years of its establishment, the institute has shown that Tripura’s talented students can prove their worth at the national and international levels while also exploring new opportunities and paths of innovation. He said IIIT Agartala emphasises an education system that goes beyond conventional learning and uses technology to solve real-life problems. So far, five batches of students have completed their programmes, and a total of 110 students from these batches are associated with the institute. The Agriculture Minister expressed hope that the institute will play an important role in advancing education, technological innovation, and research in Tripura. He called upon the institute’s authorities to build partnerships with leading technology companies, industries, and research institutions in the country, so that more opportunities are created for students and researchers. He hoped these initiatives would enable students to develop new technologies, turn innovative ideas into practical solutions, and make meaningful contributions to the nation’s technological progress.
Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Industries and Commerce Brishaketu Debbarma said the state government is working continuously for the welfare and development of local people. He said IIIT Agartala will benefit the people of Tripura and contribute to the overall development of the state.
Among other dignitaries, the Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIIT Agartala, Lt. Gen. (Dr.) K. Himalay Singh (Retd.), and the Director of NIT Agartala, Prof. S.K. Patra, also addressed the gathering. IIIT Agartala Director Prof. Abhay Kumar delivered the welcome address, and Assistant Professor Prarthana Dutta proposed the vote of thanks. ICA
